How to use this tool

  1. Select JPG, PNG or static WebP images.
  2. Choose JPG, PNG or WebP and a background color for JPG.
  3. Review the result and download it before clearing the workspace.

When this tool helps

Use conversion when an upload form accepts a different format or when you need a transparent image for a design. Changing the format creates a new file; it does not restore detail that was missing from the original.

Choose the right settings

PNG and transparency
Choose PNG for a logo, illustration or screenshot whose transparent areas or sharp lines matter. PNG keeps transparency, but photographic images can produce larger files.
JPG and background color
Choose JPG for a photo when transparency is unnecessary. Pick the background color before conversion: every transparent area will be filled with that color. Adjust quality while checking small details.
WebP for web use
WebP can store transparency and often gives a useful balance between size and appearance. Check that the destination accepts WebP. This tool supports still images, not animated files.

A practical example

A transparent illustration in PNG and JPG

  1. Select a transparent PNG illustration.
  2. Save one copy as PNG. Then choose JPG, a white background and quality 85%.
  3. Compare the two results: the PNG stays transparent; the JPG has a white background.

The example below was converted by this tool. Both files remain 480 × 300 pixels. The checkerboard behind the PNG helps you see its transparent areas.

Book illustration surrounded by transparent areas.
PNG480 × 300 px · PNG8,682 bytes
The same book illustration on a white background.
JPG480 × 300 px · JPG8,147 bytes

These examples use our own test illustration. The checkerboard shows transparent areas; it is not part of the image.

Common mistakes

Renaming the extension
Changing .png to .jpg in a file name does not convert the image. Use the output file produced by the tool.
Expecting a smaller file every time
Size depends on the image, format and quality. A conversion to PNG may increase a photo's file size; compare the actual output before choosing.

Tool limits

Up to 10 MiB and 20 million pixels per image; 20 files and 50 MiB per batch. Static JPG, PNG and WebP only.

Frequently asked questions

Will transparency be preserved?

PNG and WebP preserve transparency. JPG fills transparent areas with your chosen background color.
